And if the cities of tomorrow were more creative and more sustainable? That is the objective of Cultural and Creative Spaces and Cities (CCSC), an organization of the European Commission. It supports public administrations in charge of spatial planning. On a daily basis, its role is to study best practices in space management and to provide advice and recommendations.
For the creation of its website, CCSC chooses to contact us directly. This is especially thanks to our B Corp label, a certification that guarantees our compliance with many societal and environmental requirements. And for the European Commission, that is certainly a very important criterion. It is specified that this is a limited budget and that a call for tenders is therefore not mandatory ;-).
With this site, CCSC aims to promote the most sustainable land development projects. As sources of inspiration. Models. It is essentially a "Toolkit", a large database, intended for public administrations, from which they can draw good ideas. It includes a detailed description full of information about each project. Therefore, the site must be very user-friendly and allow for .
"The website we are creating for this European Commission organization is like a large library. It catalogs all the most sustainable urban development projects."
Christy, Project Manager, 148 Collective Agency
One of the main challenges is thus the creation of the search tool, based on a system of nested filters. In clear terms, the user starts by choosing a first category, for example "Diversity," "Ecology," or "Governance." This then gives access to a new list of subcategories. Each time a filter or sub-filter is chosen, the list of results updates to present the projects that best match the sought themes.
"From the perspective of both the site's development and its design, the priority was the same: to create a hyper-functional database to allow the user to perform searches simply and intuitively."
Christy, Project Manager, 148 Agency Collective
From a design perspective, the priority is the same: a simplified user experience that allows for the quickest possible search for a project and easy access to all related information. Like a well-organized library. The interface should be clean and airy. The content should be clear and digestible. We propose to CCSC a dual-screen design. On the left half of the screen, the filters. On the right half, the results. This way, visibility is just as good on the filters as it is on the results. And for each project, one can immediately read a first summary paragraph, accompanied by a "Read more" link.
An easy-to-use site for public administrations who wish to consult it. A site that is also easy to use for CCSC, which is also the administrator. We create for our client an Excel spreadsheet in which they can integrate all the data of a project, its themes, and sub-themes. They have nothing to do in the Backoffice: as soon as a project is entered into the Excel spreadsheet, it is integrated into the site and its filters are automatically assigned to it. A huge time saver!
