Rethinking a technical catalogue as a business platform for marketing teams and opticians

The Krys Group product repository is a strategic tool for both marketing teams and opticians alike. It centralises several hundred references, their technical specifications, and sales support content. Over time, its management has grown increasingly complex: scattered data, lengthy update cycles, and a heavy reliance on technical teams.

Krys Group issued a call for tenders to completely rethink this tool around two complementary challenges: building a reliable, scalable product repository that marketing teams could administer independently, and transforming this technical catalogue into a marketing-assisted tool through a UX/UI experience designed for field use.

We proposed a response structured around two strategic directions.

Priority 1: Building a robust data architecture and empowering the Marketing department

Before even addressing the interfaces, we proposed rethinking the entire data architecture from the ground up.

The goal was to create a single data repository capable of centralising all product information within a reliable, structured, and scalable database. Each piece of data is entered once, qualified, validated, and then automatically propagated across all outputs: web catalogue, product sheets, technical tables, and PDF exports.

To enable marketing teams to take autonomous ownership of their catalogue, we proposed a business-oriented back-office designed for non-technical users. It incorporates all the features required to manage the catalogue, including range and product sheet administration, intelligent import with mapping and business rules, dynamic management of product attributes, and automatic generation of PDF sheets and the complete catalogue.

Thanks to this new data architecture, updates are cascaded across all outputs. Where several weeks — or even months — were previously needed to roll out a single update, a few minutes could now be sufficient to publish a new reference or enrich a product range.

To meet performance and scalability requirements, we proposed building the platform on Laravel. This framework allows us to handle large data volumes, run heavy processing tasks in the background, and guarantee a robust, secure, and easily maintainable architecture. The catalogue thus becomes a sustainable business platform, capable of evolving at the pace of Krys Group's needs without requiring any fundamental rethinking of its technical architecture.

Axis 2: transforming a technical catalogue into a genuine assisted marketing tool

Our second strategic direction consisted of transforming this technical repository into a platform capable of supporting opticians in their day-to-day work. The experience was designed with a tablet-first approach to reflect actual point-of-sale usage. The interface prioritises quick reading, intuitive navigation, and immediate access to essential information.

Each product sheet is built around a dual reading experience:

  • The first is aimed at the expert, providing access to the full set of technical specifications, compatibility details, manufacturing constraints, and product data.
  • The second translates this technical complexity into a commercial sales pitch, drawing on an approach inspired by the FAB method (Features, Advantages, Benefits). The objective is to help the optician explain the benefits of a product before even going into its technical specifics.

The platform is built around a multi-criteria search engine, navigation organised by use case rather than technical nomenclature, a product comparison tool to facilitate upselling, an interactive table of contents for navigating between product families, and enriched content such as QR codes, visuals, diagrams, and videos. Everything is available within a hybrid web and PDF experience, ensuring continuity of use across all formats.

The UX/UI decisions we put forward were grounded in extensive benchmarking and research into SaaS interfaces, e-commerce catalogues, and product comparison tools. Our aim was to simplify the browsing of a rich catalogue while enhancing the perception of Krys's expertise across its distribution networks.
