Organization of a side event at the international treaty to limit plastic pollution

The United Nations Environment Assembly adopted a historic resolution in March 2022 titled "Ending Plastic Pollution: Towards an International Legally Binding Instrument." The second negotiation session took place in Paris, France, from May 29 to June 2, 2023.
To mark this occasion and contribute to this important process, the City of Paris is organizing its first International Forum to End Plastic Pollution in Cities, which took place on May 26, 2023, at the Climate Academy in Paris.

It was a pleasure to work with you! A big thank you to the teams from 148, you have been fantastic support points! Our contacts who were there this morning were amazed by the high quality of the event, congratulations again!

Lila, Project Leader "Ban on Single-Use Plastics", City of Paris

A side event, two objectives

One year after the opening of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the holding of the second round of negotiations for the international plastic treaty in Paris is an opportunity to highlight the ambition held by the City of Paris for several years, that of a city "zero single-use plastic."

This event therefore has two main objectives: the first is to showcase cities that have implemented ambitious actions to reduce single-use plastic in order to create momentum and encourage replicability, the second is to provide negotiators with recommendations from these cities in order to influence the negotiations and amplify their voice.

Unite and organize

The number of stakeholders involved in organizing this day (United Nations Environment Programme, World Economic Forum, NGOs, international city networks) makes this conference an event that requires special attention regarding coordination. Ensuring the smooth logistical operation of the event was of course a priority for us and requires good advance preparation (in a very short time!).

Our mission involves a threefold coordination: that of the diverse and international stakeholders to establish and finalize the conference program, that of the speakers who will participate in the round tables, and finally that of the service providers and volunteers on the day itself to welcome the 200 expected attendees under the best conditions.

The need of the city of Paris was therefore to rely on experienced operational resources who could quickly intervene alongside them on many organizational aspects.

A harness of substance and form

GreenFlex and 148 Agence Collective, two committed entities passionate about environmental issues, partnering for this adventure, requiring fluidity and responsiveness. GreenFlex, as an expert in the ecological transition challenges faced by organizations and communities, and 148 Agence Collective, as a B Corp agency specializing in event organization. On the "substance" aspects, GreenFlex contributed its expertise (program, preparation of round tables, coordination of speakers… and even the facilitation of the conference 😊 )

On the "form" aspects, we managed the overall coordination of the day with the international partners and service providers, sizing and anticipating the logistical needs of the conference and round tables, creating the event's identity and harmonizing communication materials. But also managing invitations and registrations, providing technical support (translation booth, interpreters, sound, lighting, live stream), managing the staff, creating the scenography…

The key events:

  • An opening speech by the Mayor of Paris: Anne Hidalgo
  • An introductory speech by the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme: Inger Andersen
  • The event in a few key figures:
  • 500 participants including 300 online
  • More than 20 partner countries for the event
  • 22 speakers (experts, mayors, scientists)
  • 4 round tables focused on combating plastic pollution
"We had one month to get into the subject, understand the issues, and respond to the constantly evolving expectations of the 18 international partners in order to concretely set up the organization of this event. It was a real sprint with a very pleasant sense of duty accomplished at the finish!"
