The project

Three catalogues were required to accompany the exhibitions, these being Moreau, Maître de Matisse, to accompany the exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Bonjour Monsieur Matisse ! Rencontre(s) for the exhibition at the MAMAC and Matisse à Nice, and Travail & Joie for the exhibitions staged at the Musée Matisse, the Musée d’Archéologie, du Théâtre de la Photographie et de l’Image, the Palais Lascaris, the Galerie des Ponchettes and the Musée Masséna.

148's contribution

Beaux-Arts Éditions had been entrusted with the task of producing the catalogues and called upon the 148 editorial team to help with two of the catalogues, the third being produced in-house. The content was prepared by Jean-Jacques Aillagon, chief curator of the event, and other commissioners. The challenge with this project lay in the need to establish some sort of dialogue between these exhibitions based on the same theme. As editorial coordinator 148 was primarily responsible for managing the very tight schedule and the various players involved.

The graphical identity was jointly devised for the three catalogues in keeping with the event charter used by the City of Nice. The texts were standardised and the iconography chosen to reflect the curators’ scientific will whilst at the same time ensuring their reader appeal. Constant communication with the curators was maintained with a view to producing three catalogues that would be common to several exhibitions, which was rather unheard of at the time.
