Born in Constantine, Algeria, in 1971, Adel Abdessemed has become an important figure in the contemporary art scene. His works, including photographs, drawings, videos, performances, or sculptures, are often considered provocative (so much so that threats led to the closure of the monographic exhibition dedicated to him at the San Francisco Art Institute just a few days after its opening in 2008); they are more complex than they appear at first glance.
The objects, places, and everyday or sensational events on which he focuses his gaze, the sidewalk in front of his Parisian studio where he invites skeletons, lions, and magic, the bronze statue of Zidane's headbutt standing 5 meters tall transform into powerful, haunting, and monumental images.
The Centre Pompidou entrusts 148 with the editorial coordination of the project, including the iconographic research of comparative works. In close collaboration with the exhibition curator, the artist, and the team from the David Zwirner gallery representing him, the content and structure of the book have been organized to make this book more than just a catalog: a multiple vision of Abdessemed's evolving work. A very "sober" typographic character, single-column layout... Elegance has been the guiding principle of the graphic project. A system of cross-references in the texts allows for exploring the richness of the catalog and comparing Abdessemed's works to possible sources of inspiration. (detail of page 104 and pages 34-35)
