
Did you know that the European Union has 24 official languages and approximately 60 regional and minority languages known as indigenous?
For over 30 years, the Atlas association has been dedicated to promoting literary translation in Europe. Through various events and training programs, such as the Literary Translation Conference, the Spring of Translation, and the Translator's Workshop, Atlas shares the wealth of all cultures. The Archipelagos website aims to connect various translators in Europe with professionals in literature.

The main target of Archipelagos is translators. The site highlights their work: translated languages, latest translations, activities… It also presents events and workshops that might interest them and in which they can participate. The site is modular and easily manageable to allow teams to quickly update translator profiles, news, and ongoing workshops.
We drew inspiration from the lines of A4 sheets, a reminder of literature, for the background of the website.
Across the site, Altas has created an opportunity to showcase residences, sometimes lesser-known programs, that have a dedicated page. To create consistency, we developed a reusable block for the residences, which also facilitates the updating of content.
Graphically, Anna and Ariane, two of our artistic directors, proposed a grid card system, which allows for a quick visual overview of several residency locations and their main characteristics at a glance. The journey enables quick navigation between the various levels of information and allows access to all the necessary information for applying in just a few clicks.
"We had the idea to offer a menu for certain content with different languages, so depending on the translator or visitor, they can quickly change the language directly on the content. These contents were created with tabs on WordPress, where each tab corresponds to a language."

If the goal is to highlight so-called minority languages, the budget of the association did not allow for a multilingual site. We therefore had to think of ways to utilize the ten different languages of the project and not emphasize one language more than another. A significant effort for many blocks, which had to be designed and developed to change languages through links.
For some common pages like workshops, Atlas decided to offer content based on the target language. Thus, the descriptions of places are translated into French and in the host country's language. The workshops are offered in the language of the organizing country. And the descriptions of the various partners are presented in two languages.
Result: a useful site that fulfills its commitment to promote linguistic heritage in Europe. We say Bravo! (a word of Italian origin shared by many languages in Europe!)
