A test with 15 questions to see which job suits me.

"Do you not know which profession to turn to? Take the Alimétiers test." This is what can be read on the homepage of the website alimetiers.com, designed to guide young people towards training and jobs in the food sector, agriculture, and fishing. For years, this 15-question test only existed in physical form: a large binder and a barcode scanner (like in the supermarket!) available at trade shows, with results read and commented on by a specialized facilitator. Ocapiat, a long-time client of 148 Agence Collective, asked us to create a digital version of this quiz conceived by the association Au goût du jour, which runs the Alimétiers stand at trade shows. The goal is to bring a bit of fun to the career orientation search while providing useful and relevant answers and adapting to the consumption habits of young people. Well, we managed to do this just a few months before the cancellation of all trade shows due to the global pandemic.

A mobile-first quiz

Who says adapting to the consumption habits of millennials means considering smartphone usage. Tanguy, our project manager, therefore suggests to the client to start with the mobile mockups. And to develop them at a later stage for the desktop version. On mobile, the design is created for scrolling and swiping. For the computer version, the question pages are resized. In both cases, the visuals and colors aim to provide a moment of pleasure rather than an obligatory task.

"In orientation centers, there is a counselor who takes the time to listen to you and guide you: the challenge of this digital quiz is to replicate the same support, the same advisory logic."

Pauline, project manager, 148 Agence Collective

Support as in person

One of the main challenges for the success of this quiz is to manage to reproduce the same support as if it were conducted in person. Not losing the human dimension or the advisory dimension. This involves a reworking of the questions to make them understandable without assistance. Because there is no one to explain them. A progress gauge helps maintain attention. And, after reflection, it has been decided to require answering all questions. To ensure a relevant result, a new question only appears once the previous one has been answered.

The quiz concludes with a description of the player's profile and personality, placing particular importance on the idea of reproducing a discourse. This profile is translated into points across different categories. It allows them to identify their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their “match” with different professions. Hélène, our art director, envisions a character who accompanies the player throughout the quiz. Gender-neutral, it allows everyone to identify with and project themselves into various professions.

"We create a playful and illustrated quiz, which takes the user by the hand and encourages them to go all the way. This involves an effective, simple, and functional interface."

A thorough reflection on the algorithm

Technically, there is a constraint. The quiz must always provide three results, regardless of the user's answers. This is akin to what a career advisor would do: think about professions that might interest the user, even if none perfectly match their profile. This reflection on the quiz logic and the creation of the algorithm is the work of Samuel, our lead developer. It all starts with a workshop with the client and the association Au Goût du jour, to better understand how to use this test. Two issues arise. First, if a profile is highly qualified, even if they say they enjoy manual activities, it is also necessary to suggest jobs appropriate to their level of qualification. Secondly, the results should suggest professions that the player might not have necessarily considered, opening up new horizons.

Samuel's idea is to create an algorithm that calculates the number of missing points needed to reach a profession, rather than stopping at the number of points obtained. This allows for proposing the most qualified job closest to their profile. Next, we conduct numerous internal tests to identify all special cases: for example, a very low number of points or, conversely, the maximum number. And Samuel adjusts his algorithm. The result: the quiz page is the most visited on the Alimétiers site!

"We really take the time to understand what the client wants to achieve with this test. From there, I can create an algorithm and do the technical design."
